Down to Earth Downtown

ITINERARY

Simply Delightful

You can call it historic, charming or quaint, but beneath the surface, Downtown Ukiah has a lot going on. Our amazing arts, museum, events, culinary hot spots, one-of-a-kind boutiques, intriguing history and friendly locals are just waiting to share their town’s authentic flavor. Our scenic, tree-lined streets are also host to a well-rounded special events calendar. But if you only had one day to spend Downtown, which we hope isn’t the case, here’s a suggestion on how to spend it.

Morning

Wake up and smell the cinnamon rolls. Schat’s Courthouse Bakery & Café on Perkins Street is home to some wonderful bakery items and they have a full breakfast menu as well. Then go walk off breakfast by taking the Heritage Walking Tour, showcasing historical buildings dating all the way back to 1850. It’s a great way to get a lay of the Downtown land and our recommendation is to do it backwards so you wind up closer to your lunch spot. Also important to know, listed as #2 on the list – The Sun House, is actually part of the Grace Hudson Museum, which is a must-stop on this outing. It features contemporary, historic and native art, along with rotating exhibits, and of course pays tribute to the artistic legacy of Grace Carpenter Hudson.

Afternoon

Now that you’ve worked up an appetite again, head to Lotus on S. State Street. This small but mighty location serves up traditional Chinese and Japanese cuisines from fresh sushi and Tamaki to fried rice and sweet and sour pork. Next up is your opportunity to partake in all the unique shopping there is Downtown – that is, if you didn’t already do so on your walking tour! Some places of note include Mendocino Barkery if you have a four-legged best friend, the Mendocino Book Company if you need a book to read during your downtime, the Dragon’s Lair, which has a classic retro '60s vibe and is full of interesting, one-of-a-kind treasures, and Tango Beauty Bar if you’re looking to pamper yourself. It’s full of nurturing products like face masks, bath bombs, makeup, Hempz lotions and you can even schedule a facial while you’re there.

And Night

Ready to wine down? We can cheers to that over at Patrona Restaurant and Lounge where you'll find an extensive wine list boasting quite the selection of local varietals, a full bar plus food made from the freshest Mendocino sourced ingredients. It’s the perfect spot to relax and plot your next day’s adventures over a glass of wine and a croquettes plate. Around the corner you’ll also find The Nook Artisan Gelato. Not only do they have a wide selection of Italian Gelato but they also have other freshly baked sweet treats and espresso. However, if you feel like you need more substance (AKA – dinner) before hitting up dessert, check out all our great Downtown restaurants to see what peaks your interest.
